Well, I tried the homemade dye method on my new Pluto wig.
You can't really tell much of a difference at a casual glance. :\ I put the old wig on top of the new one, and in the light it's not easy to tell where one ends and the other begins.

With the fibers side by side, though, there is a visible difference. (New on the left, old on the right.)

So it's sort of a success, I suppose. It's roughly the same in terms of darkness, but a more correct shade of green. So it wasn't a total loss. I just hope the green doesn't wear off everywhere when I wear it. I rinsed it as much as I could, but I still got some green on my hands when I combed it.
Bleh. At least I'll be able to style it more correctly than the first wig.
