I was at No Brand Con over the weekend. Con report later.

(Question for the peanut gallery. How the hell did Anime Detour get so big so fast? Is it the location?)

I'm dying from tiredness. Got day shifts today and tomorrow before I can sleep. Got an interview thingy this afternoon that I'm completely unprepared for, whee.

Finally watched Dr. Horrible. lol latest. Kind of obsessed atm.

Saturday night I dreamed [ profile] sache hacked into Stephen Colbert's computer. Might have had something to do with reading Chapter 10 of Watchmen the night before.

I'm screwed for [ profile] sm_fanswap.

I've lost the pattern I need for Shel's Princess Saturn dress. Going to track down a new one tomorrow evening if I don't find it before then. Almost finished building the remaining prop pieces.

Doing four panels at Anime North next month. I should track down one more for a registration refund, haha.

That's about it.

Not until June, most likely. :\

Pretty much. I'd like to think the staff culture had something to do with it, but I'm pretty sure 90% of the reason for our success was the location.

It's insane. AnimeIowa and No Brand have been running for a decade, and Detour surpassed both their reg numbers in only a few years. Kind of unfortunate, in some ways.

Not so much, really. We had a much larger population of potential anime fans to draw on than either AI or NoBrand, and in fact a lot of Twin Cities fans went to those conventions before Detour got rolling. It's entirely possible that 75-80% of our membership had never heard of either convention before coming to Detour and running into folks from, well, NoBrand at least.

Looking back, it's theoretically possible that we hurt AI worse than NoBrand, because AI had always relied on a cohort of otaku from the Twin Cities to work on their staff/volunteer, and once those people were working for us they weren't too inclined to go off to Des Moines and spend another weekend working at another anime convention instead of just kicking back and enjoying the con.

Still, AI didn't break 2K until 2007. That's not Detour's fault.

I suppose what Detour gets is the young local crowd that can't travel to other states for cons, and since this is a highly-populated area that's a bigger crowd than some.

That's a biig part of it, yes. It'll be interesting to see how the move to the Sheraton impacts attendance and the average age of membership, since the Sheraton is not as accessible by mass transit as the T-bird and Crowne Plaza were. Fewer off-site eateries withing walking distance, too.

Well, we've got openings on the Adult fanfic panel & Death Note panels ... (Then again, there's probably a whackload of openings on Death Note. I just created it)

I could do Death Note, if you don't mind that I haven't seen the anime. I've read the entire manga, including volume 13, and I've seen all three live-action movies.

I don't write adult fic, so I passed on that one. I was thinking about Fanthropology (fandom is my real fandom, yo) but I wouldn't feel right busting into a stranger's panel without at least asking them first, and I'm not sure how to do that.

I've only read the manga myself, too

Hmm, should I pass, then? Maybe you should get someone who's seen the anime instead, for variety?

Well, so far I don't *have* anyone else. Registration is a mess this year. I'm trying hard to get to five panels, but as my last LJ post says, I'm being blocked at all turns by idiotic panels and stuff I have no clue about. :P

You want to attempt five, sign up and we've got a month to get approved.

I don't think you're going to have much trouble filling the panel, but I have a feeling I should put in my name so you don't end up alone with a bunch of hyper slash fangirls. ;)

I hope I won't have trouble filling the panel. ^^;;; But it would be lovely having a sane person beside me, given my other panels include Chaos. :P

Chaos is sane.....well....mostly sane, most of the time ^^;;;;

And I'm still sane :D you all haven't driven me completely crazy yet!

I'd volunteer to help you with the Death Note panel, but I have absolutely no knowledge of the series aside from the fact it involves someone killing people by writing their names in a book.

I put in the Death Note suggestion from the anpanels site. Is that all I have to do, or is it past a deadline or something?

I'll see if that's done it. Hopefully it has. :D

Whaaat, you only have to do 5 panels for a refund? I will do art panels, Japanese panels, and how-to-be-an-awesome-biznatch panels. EASY MONEY.

Panels list thread!

You can sign up or suggest additional panels at, but you have to have at least three people join you for the panel to become official.

Also, your dreams are giving me far too much credit there. I couldn't even hack into a speak'n'spell.

For some reason we were staying in a hotel that was the same building as his office, and when we peeked in there was this computer sitting on in the middle of the room and nobody around. I poked at it, but you figured out his password and a bunch of windows came up. That was about when I freaked out and ran, haha.
