dejana: (As In Autumn)
Short report this time, because I spent most of the weekend running a room party and didn't set foot outside my hotel room for 8 hours straight both nights. I'm glad I did it, I've wanted to host a Sailor Moon party for ages, but if I'm going to do it again I need more help and shorter hours. @_@

On to the madness! )

The con, however, went well on the whole. And I think... I've decided to be back on staff officially next year. The year off did some good, and a lot of the stuff that had been bothering me personally doesn't matter as much anymore. I like being part of Detour. If I can balance everything I want to do, I'm gonna do it. ^_^
dejana: (Granny Weatherwax)
Oh look what I'm doing again. Three weeks late. Whee. God I wish I had done this right away when I remembered more. The general feeling of the con still lingers, but a lot of the detail is lost. At least I have lots of pictures. :)

Friday )
dejana: (Scene from "Guards! Guards!")
In the interest of NOT falling into that hole where I end up not writing my con report for weeks after the event, I'm starting it now.

This trip got off to a rocky start when my plane was delayed at the gate for nearly two hours due to a faulty door sensor. On the plus side, I was able to get through about half of So You Want to Be a Wizard, which I'm rereading because Diane Duane is here at the con. I loved it and its sequel, which was all there was of the series at the time, as a kid but I haven't read them in ages. It's amusing the things that stick with you, though - every now and then the snippet about the growing grass interrupting its song to boo and hiss at an approaching lawnmower pops into my mind, but I had forgotten where it was from.

My last unread Pratchett is Nation, which I saved for this week so I'd have an excuse to carry it around the airport when I got here, haha. Success - it led to a conversation with a guy waiting for the hotel shuttle. My first friendly chat of any reasonable length with a random fellow congoer, believe it or not. I fail so hard.

My first roommate, Tiffany, was waiting for me when I got to the hotel. The other two won't be here until tomorrow. She's from Florida, is about my age, and reminds me a bit of [livejournal.com profile] nephthysmoon. We got checked in, picked up our registration stuff, and then headed out to find a CVS and dinner. It's hot here, but it's a dry heat, and I was prepared for it, so it hasn't been too rough thus far. Hoping not to spend extended amounts of time outside the air conditioning, though. I've never been to the southwest before. For some reason I wasn't expecting palm trees, but there are a lot of tall graceful ones here. Seen cacti, and barren hills, and desert sand, which were all new to me.

After dinner we went to the meet & greet mixer thing. I have to admit, now that I'm here it's evident the organizers of this con are a lot more solid than I feared they were. Information was really late getting on to the website, but everything here seems to be well planned out and full of generous goodies. There's a consuite, and on top of that they served hors d'oeurves at the mixer. Our registration bags contained water bottles, pens, and pins, all printed with the convention information. Nice stuff. The mixer really got things rolling with a trivia contest, where each table of random new acquaintances was a team. The trivia was really difficult, and not at all Discworld related aside from the Name That Cover round, but it worked out for the best as everyone knew different bits of each category. My team tied for second place. :D The prize for the first place team was a bag of books to divide amongst themselves. They're really going all-out here. For the record, I hear there are around 800 attendees, and registration was about $90 if I recall correctly. The con runs through Monday afternoon.

A major difference between this convention and anime conventions has already made itself evident. Totally obvious, of course, but the implications of it didn't really hit me until tonight. Everyone here has read and loved the same series. Imagine going to an anime convention where all the attendees have watched your favorite show and love it as much as you do. It's awesome, but weird at the same time, being surrounded by people who know just as much as you about a series and think it's just as great. An entire convention of them, from all corners of the world, all ages and walks of life. I'm trying not to freak out my roommate by being too crazed with excitement, haha, but I'm totally pumped. I think this may be an event to rival Fiddler's Green.

I'm back after a few days off from work. Let's see what I still remember.

post-con craziness )

Anime North has been... really comfortable. I can't think of any better way to describe it. The programming might not be as refined as some cons, but the atmosphere is very relaxed, and I've felt at home and comfy there pretty much since the first year I went. And the multi-panel focus on writing and fandom itself is unlike any other con I've been to. First and foremost, though, attending this con has always been about the people. I'll miss going to AN, but the number of .moon friends that went this year was very much a one-time thing, and if hanging with the Fanboys is out, too, there's really no point. :\

Happily, this trip was a good one. ^_^ Thanks, everyone; it was great to spend time with you all. ♥

Now for the fun stuff.

Saturday )

This post is crazy long due to pictures, so I'll split the con report again here.
dejana: (TLDR)
Now that I've recovered somewhat, it's time to start my con report, which will probably be easier than my usual since I didn't actually do a heck of a lot. With all the last-minute cosplay work, I didn't make it to a single complete panel I wasn't personally on. My con behavior seems to bend closer to the Fanboys' every year - a lot less programming, a lot more hanging out with friends (although for different reasons). ^_~

Con report starts earlier than normal, because this year there was Kasey! :D

pre-con antics! )

Friday )

But cosplay day is a story for part 2!
dejana: (Ed - Animated)
After an unintentional hiatus, I finally completed another 12 of 12! (Holy shit, he's been undergoing chemo?? Good to see him posting 12s again, but damn...)

pictures! with bonus con swag! )
dejana: (Spork - Robot)
Blargh, I really want to get through the rest of this tonight if I can. It's the 12th, I'll have other things to post tonight. (It's the 12th, everybody! ;D)

Sunday )

Monday )

thoughts ) So that is the end of that.

Pictures of what little con swag I picked up will be added when I remember to take them. Maybe tonight.
dejana: (Ohayo Earth)
I seem to be continuing my tradition of dreaming about Detour over the week following the con. I suppose that's what happens when you spend five days with the same crowd.

I'm taking a break from typing up drabble contest entries to (hopefully) finish my con report...

Saturday )

So that was Saturday... and I think I'm going to be lazy and split my con report into three parts after all. xP

Back to working on the contest PDFs.

ETA: Some more press for the con.
dejana: (Sweet Earth)
Back again after a long absence, this time due to Anime Detour. I've pretty much done nothing on LJ yet but scan my flist for posts about the con, so my apologies if I've missed something important. Ohayocon will now be added to my list of backlogged con reports, alas. Gotta do this one while it's fresh in my mind.

Detour went amazingly well. Being in an alien hotel, downtown, with a thousand more attendees, so many things could have gone horribly wrong, but on the whole the entire event went very smoothly. I had an absolutely fantastic time, which of course makes what I have to do all the harder. But con afterglow never lasts... particularly when it seems I'm being shuffled out the door even sooner than I'd planned. But that's a rant for another time.

Friday )
dejana: (Sakaki - Dolphin)
And now back to your regularly-scheduled (but overdue as usual) programming...

Saturday )

Sunday )

cosplay pics )

Oh, I almost forgot! Swag! )

AFO was over, but MiniMoonCon continued! :D

Beach! )

It got dark before too long, so we headed back to [livejournal.com profile] shel_b_129's for the night. But the adventure wasn't over yet! More later. :D
dejana: (BACON!)
Okay, finally getting started on my con report for all you picture-hungry people. :P

Thursday )

Friday )

cosplay pics )

More later.
dejana: (Goddess)
Sorry for the delay on this; I've gotten really serious about the ASMR restoration project lately and that's where most of my computer time is going. My memory of the rest of the con is already pretty vague, but let's see what I can put together...

Saturday )

Sunday )

Monday )

On the way home I made a side trip to Niagara Falls, which I'll make another post about later. :D

As I said before, even if it wasn't all it might have been, it was a good time. After three years, I'm finally starting to feel like I fit in at AN. Even if I wasn't the greatest panelist, it was a nice feeling to have a panelist badge like many of the people I was hanging out with, and to be asked "When's your next panel?" along with everyone else like a real member of the overall Anime North team. ^^ AN was really overwhelming at first, there are so many great people to meet and I've never been the best at the whole social thing... but now that I have a few years behind me, I'm starting to feel more like I belong. :)

Which, of course, makes the 2009 decision all the harder. I still have no idea what I'm going to do.
dejana: (Believe - You Can Do It)
Okay, let's see what I can remember. Going back to ancient times, here, all the way back to May 21st...

Wed-Thurs )

Friday )

To be continued later.
dejana: (Yay!)
Finally, as promised, the pictures! I focused a lot on getting general pictures of the con, since this was our last year at the Ramada, so I don't know how many of these will be of public interest. But I'll post them all anyway. :)

Photo bonanza! )

And that's that for me and cons until Anime North. It's weird not to have more events on my calendar, but I'm glad to have the break. I'm a bit conned out at the moment. @_@
dejana: (HP7 - Neville)
Dreamed about Detour again last night, haha. And running from... something... but not in a scary way, more in a playful way. Hmm.

Anyway, back to the con report.

Detour part 2 )

Next up, pictures!
dejana: (Default)
It's kind of funny... all I can think about after Detour is more Detour. This past Detour, the next Detour, the people at Detour... Detour Detour Detour. I even dreamed about the con last night, haha. On the whole, con this year went well for me. Much better than last year, which isn't really saying much considering all I was thinking about after Detour '07 was whether or not I should quit >.> But! Seriously, it was good. So I'm going to attempt a con report this time, hopefully a short one, since I'm rather tired of the whole con report thing at the moment. :P

THIS. IS. DETOOOOUR! )
dejana: (Cosplay - Princess Pluto)
Forgot to include these pics in Friday's report.

The venue )

Moving on...

Saturday )

Sunday )

Hey, it just occurred to me that I accomplished something impressive: I had a drama-free experience at Sakura-Con! xD From a lot of stuff I've read over the years, Sakura tends to be dramatastic. I certainly overheard a lot of drama going on. ^^; But besides the sickness, no drama for me! VICTOLY! :D

Now I have a blessed couple of days until Detour, and after that a nice break before Anime North. :)
dejana: (Chiyo-chan)
BNFs Have More Fun

When I decided to do both coastal cons, I was ready for the crazy schedule, the lack of sleep, the general exhaustion, the expense and stress. But I forgot about one thing: the otaflu. I got con plague from Boston, and it worsened on me over the week. (If some kind of bi-coastal epidemic breaks out, IT WAS ME. >P) Plus, a little TMI, but I also ended up with the female curse, which some of you may know is not an average thing for me. So I was pretty sick over the weekend. Like "dear God don't let me pass out on these wonderful people" sick. So this con report may be short, since I didn't do as much as I normally would have. :\

Fortunately I was mostly okay for the first couple of days, when I was visiting my friend from college who lives in Seattle.

Wednesday )

Thursday )

Friday )

And once again I fail at writing the entire con report in one go and will have to finish it tomorrow. @_@
dejana: (Cosplay - Princess Pluto)
Okay, let's finish this sucker.

Saturday )

Sunday )

And now I fly out again tomorrow to go to Sakura-Con. @_@
